It is mostly Americans who think that theirs is the greatest nation on Earth, although there are many from oppressed nations who long to immigrate here. If you talk to someone in Canada, Switzerland, Poland, Britian or a host of other nations they might believe that their country is great. It is only natural to feel pride in the land of your birth.
As for me, America is the birthplace of freedom and democracy and has until recently been a shining example for the rest of the world to follow. It is a shame that our current leadership has placed us in a position to be looked down upon, and brought shame our people and our country. I believe that once we get through this period of international disgrace, our country will once again rise to prominence as the leader of the free world.

Definitly the best! All the factors of a good country, including standard of living are computed in GNP, and we have the highest by far. After us is Japan and Germany I think

Well, it is depend. It is best in someway, like it is a free country, and people move to America to have a better life. But it is also bad in some other way, like the way some people act, and things are expensive. So, we cannot say America is the greatest coutry on Earth, but it is a great country.

It depends how you measure greatness. In terms of wealth, countries like Luxembourg and Switzerland have higher GDPs per capita than the US. In terms of living standards, Sweden and Japan have higher ratings than the US. The only way in which the US is the greatest is its national wealth, but it will soon be overtaken by China.

We have such a great history. The railrods, Harlem Renaissance, etc. I think the education and intelligence level of the country has certainly gone downhill, but yes it is still the greatest country on Earth.

The USA is the greatest country ever in the history of the world. No other country in todays world has done more good for the world than any other. We have ended 2 world wars, helped bring Europe out of the post WW2 depression by pumping billions of dollars into them. We have ended many dicators like Sadam,
We have our problems just like every country. But you can judge a country by how many people want to leave and how many want to come in.
One of our problems in the USA is trying to keep people out. To people who say Canada is so much better well do you know that 90 percent of Canadas population lives within a few hundred miles or Kilometers to the border. HMMM I wonder why. Maybe because our economy is strong. Also with countries like Switzerland they pays alot of taxs and for their so called system. You give up alot of rights when you let the government run health care. Thats why Canada, England and many other countries socalized health care are in shambles. You see alot of people come to America for surgery but they can get it for "free" at home. This is because people go on waiting lists for years and you better hope its in the begining of the year when the health care dept has money to spend on you.
Look at all the countries in the world who try to immitate us in moves, music, food etc. Last time I checked Americans dont go to Europe, Asia or any place else trying to find freedom. There is a saying the "American dream" People didnt just come up with that for giggles.
Also when you are the top dog the little dogs will hate you and try to join up and take you out. Look at the UN and see for yourself. Plus the USA population is much more than many European countries and you have to take that into consideration.

Absolutely
But--I agree with the others here that have stated that we are loosing it and of late -- not so slowly---there are those at work here that want to melt us into the global forum and have made some unbelievable strides at doing just that in just this last two years---And---if people are not considerably more diligent in their awareness of these matters-- one day soon --- we will simply be known as North Americans !!

It's the most ARMED country on earth! This makes it powerful - not great. Someone gets murdered there every minute - more people live on the streets and no-one gives a damn. It interferes in other countries for fiscal reasons. It does nothing about Israel killing innocent civilians (let alone abusing their human rights)-in Palestine, by providing them with weapons and financial support - just like it did in Iraq. One gets the feeling that "hypocritical" would be a better adjective. There was the rise and fall of the Roman empire - the rise and fall of the British empire - and there will be the rise and fall of the American one too because politically they f***k everything they touch!
