Here is what I posted for someone else with a similar question.
Practice Practice Practice. Your vocal chords are muscles in their own, and just like when you go out to run you have to stretch your muscles and warm them up so they can perform to their full potential. Making siren noises and panting like a dog are excellent ways to warm up your vocal chords. Also, vocalize going up and down major scales. Do Re Me Fa So La Te Do. The best singers in the world require at least 15 minutes to warm up their vocal chords.
To familiarize yourself with hitting specific notes, you absolutely must sing with a piano or guitar as a backup until you know you are dead on. The biggest problem singers face is they don't learn how to tell whether they are sharp, flat or natural.

Firstly you need to build up your lungs so swimming is great for that and works for me.
Next grab a keyboard/piano start playing a scale from the 'middle c' (it should be smack bang in the middle of your keyboard/piano
and it is a white key) and play the white keys one at a time towards the right singing 'Na' for each until you play eight notes - don't strain too much as this will hurt your vocal chords.
Then when you reach the highest note you play each note backwards until you end up with 'middle c' again.
Next exercise using the same white keys/notes sing 'Ma'.
repeat again sing 'La'
repeat again sing with lips pursed together sing 'M' and make
it a constant continual 'M' sound (like you are humming) until you have reached the eighth note and then go back down to 'middle c'.
Another exercise is tough rolling ' the sound a cat would make when it purrs' (make a high purr sound then a low and repeat for as long as you can)
This exercise is good for warming up your vocal chords before you start any singing.
'Mary had a little lamb' is also a warm up exercise (I know you probably will think it sounds silly but do it in private if you have too)
These are just a few exercises that you would do before you even begin to sing a song.
The most important thing with singing is looking after your vocal chords - these need to be warmed up every time. It's a little like a stretch routine before you do physical exercise and will help to
sustain your voice for a longer period.
Remember to take your breaths when there is a break in the music and when you sing make sure you do not use all your air up on just a few words stretch it out (this technique will get better with time)
For more warm up scales like the one above, grab a book from your music store and study up each scale so you know how to play them for your warm-ups, failing that grab a friend who might play for you who already knows the scales.
Lastly start singing your favourite music and if you get a sore throat rest it and drink plenty of water only, stay away from mucus forming drinks like milk and don't drink alcohol before you sing as this will dry out your vocal chords.
Best of luck

Make sure when you take breaths to sing, your shoulders do not move, and that all your breath comes from your stomache. It may make your tummy look big, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Make sure that your sound doesn't come from your nose. Make sure it is all supported by your breath. Also, sing to songs that are good for your voice at first. Then slowly sing songs that'll open up your vocal range.

You may have to spend a little money. I suggest a vocal exercise CD. Learning to sing is hard work and you really should learn how to sing proper through lessons or a CD or a video or something because if you don't you will definitely damage your voice.

pick your fav. song and try to sing it.
What I did is,I've almost hidden myself in the night making up a song, and singing it in the morning.that's how you sing better and memorize the music.
Step 1:Try humming it.Then, sing it softly,so no one can here it,and not like me.
