Yes they do and no they don't.
It totally depends on the model of the Compaq and the model of the Gateway.
Look on the Compaq website at the model you are interested in, and note down which type of RAM it take - such as 133MHz SDRAM. Then, look at the Gateway website and check the model there as well.
If the type of RAM matches - then they take the same RAM. If it doesn't, then they don't.

I had a situation that I couldn't find memory to work in a HP computer, at the computer lab at school, we had old Gateways laying around from other departments. We used some memory that matched what we needed for the HP and used it for a while. When we bought new memory for the HP, the newer memory did not work. Anyhow, check with crucial.com to find the proper memory for your computer.

They could but you would actually have to research if it is PC2700, PC3100 etc.... Ram is not computer specific and is most likely not made by the company you purchased the computer from. It would be like saying you had Ford motor oil in your car when most likely is Penzoil or Quaker State, I hope that makes since.

Very disappointed with DELL, both the 5738 and customer service. My recommendation: do not buy DELL. Things have changed with Dell. It used to have great products and good customer service, but not anymore. I bought the inspiron and what a mistake I made. Nothing but problems. Stay away from DELL. Not the company it used to be. They should be ashamed to sell a product like the inspiron 5738.
