What do you get when you cross a 1 hump camel with a 2 hump camel? If you get a 1 1/2 hump camel, what happens when you mate 2 of those 1 1/2 hump camels?

Dromedary and Bactrain camels can cross breed with each other and with Llamas.

The resulting offspring will usually have a single hump and may not be able to breed (similar to a mule).

This was an interesting question so I did a little research on it and found that in modern camel research, the one-humped and two-humped camels are assumed to have the same origins, and crosses between the two species are termed hybrids. The parents have the same number of chromosomes . According to camel owners, there is a heterosis effect insofar as the working capacity, milk and meat yields of cross-bred camels are improved by 30 to 40 percent. The disadvantages of the F1 generation are increased susceptibility to disease, higher feeding requirements and lower fat reserves owing to the vestigial front hump. Both the male hybrids and the female hybrids are fertile.
Vestigial front hump means that the visual sign of the front hump is there but it is not a full functional hump. So in effect they really are 1 1/2 hump camels. If two 1 1/2 camels were bred back together the offspring would segregate back into 1 hump and two hump camels as well as some 1 1/2 hump camels.

I would say that you do indeed get a 1 1/2 hump camel. Then, if two 1 1/2 hump camels mated, I would imagine that the result would be a baby 1 1/2 hump camel.

Where this gets tricky is when the 1 1/2 hump camel mates with, let's say, a 1 hump camel. The result would be a 1 1/4 hump camel.

Keep this chain going long enough, and there would sure be some strange-looking camels out there!!!!!! :-)

Merry Christmas!!!
