It's a collie and it's a he. All of the Lassies were male. They used male collies because they look better than the females. That's not meant to offend, that's just the reason they always gave when interviewed.

LAssie was actually a male mahogany sable collie. Collies are working dogs. They were bred to herd sheep and pull carts. They are valued for their loalty and intelligence. They come in a variety of color combinations: Mahogany, Sable, and Blue Merle. Lassie was a combination of the first two color types.
