That idea has already been used. Your question brings to mind "The Elevator" (1974). A movie about an assortment of people from different walks of life trapped in a high-rise lift. By coincidence one of these people turns out to be an armed robber trying to make his escape after committing a crime. Good, suspenseful film. I saw it many years ago and highly recommend it.

Mickey's obviously never seen 'Night Of The Living Dead'. Lots of conflict in a small space in only a few hours time.
If you used 'flashbacks' to tell each character's story then 20 characters would just be way too much for a 2 hour movie. You would need fewer characters in order to have the time to allow each character to grow and matter to the audience. Essentially, the movie you're proposing is 'The Breakfast Club' in an elevator. It would be easy to write when you don't want to describe surroundings much. But, then the only thing to carry the movie would be the 'heart' of the characters. And it would be up to you to give them that heart. In The Breakfast Club each audience member could see themselves a little in each character up on the screen. That's why it worked so well and still to this day captures its audience. You can throw a bunch of people in an elevator and hope for the best. Remember, though this would not be the first movie that takes place in a stuck elevator. You'll learn this during your research ;-)

I think this idea like many, could be good if it is done right. Obviously, if you focus on the elevator for the whole time that would be boring. I think if you have something creative like show different endings, maybe show places where everything could go wrong, but then go back in time and retry it. There is a short story like this called "Sure Thing" by David Ives. I suggest you read it if you are seriously considering this idea. Good luck.

ok.. not 2 hours.. 2 days! that's the weekend so the progression that they are in isn't open. they're going to actual ought to comfortably have a minimum furnish of nutrition. An previous guy with liquor, a britney-spears variety personality with chewing gum reachable, and a fat guy with a large number of snacks in his briefcase. between the characters would might want to be a chain-smoker who has to strive against the urge to mild-up.. you need to have an ****** on board, a shy-variety, a white wannabe pimp/gangsta, a Malcom X variety personality.. in 2 days you need to imagine how loopy they'd probably bypass. the start ought to initiate off comedic. Then the tale can smash right down to how loopy each and each personality turns into in a good area with out nutrition. with the help of the time Monday rolls round, they locate each and each personality useless from maddness and starvation. .. and that i'd favor to thank the Academy for this kind of prestigious award...

2 hours isnt nearly long enough for any conflict or interaction to take place.it needs to be a place where theyre stuck together for at least a week or 2---like a deserted island, or an isolated cabin during a storm where they get snowed in for a long time. this plot has already been done many times.

You would have to have some creative writing if the only focus is going to be in the elevator...
unless you do where the people think back to scenarios in their lives or dream sequences or something...
otherwise, I like the idea!

sure but how long exactly is the movie going to be? even stuck in an elevator for like 3 hours is maddening.

You mean like a documentary?
Or just a regular movie?

Because I'm not sure you could form a Hollywood movie out of that.

But maybe I'm wrong. If you develop the idea a little, it may work.

Good luck (:

They already did it. It was called The Breakfast Club. Only difference was study hall, not elevator. Bad movie.

No. Unless it's a comedy and weird, unexplainable crap starts to happen in the elevator. On second thought, no it wouldn't.
