A few factors determine the battery life...these include
1) Whether you're playing music or not
2) Screen bright or not
3) Whether battery is new
4) Whether it's an standard battery or heavy duty one
Generally the rules are when you're on battery power is minimise the screen light and cut out other activities to a minimum like playing music and watching DVDs...simple surfing and emailing can last a good few hours on low screen light.

Not very long. It depends on what kind of laptop you have, what you're doing with it, and how new your battery is. Anything over a couple of hours is doing good. If you're expecting to be able to work all day on a single charge, good luck.

Is it sitting on a shelf?
Is it in a computer being used? And if so, what are you doing with the computer?
