Definitely, the Mac is a superior machine. Yes, it does cost more, but you get more. The operating system seldom crashes or hangs. I use a Windows based Dell at work and I find that it is more apt to receive viruses and errors.
Here is the real test: what is she going to do with the computer? You said Word, etc. My daughters use Photoshop and web authoring tools. They are teenagers and both say that they like the feel of the Mac over a PC when they are working on graphics. I couldn't agree more.

I highly recommend a Mac. I have been a Mac user for nearly three years now, after being a Windows user nearly ten years. Most PC users don't know very much at all about the Mac, so don't listen to them. No one accidentally buys a Mac. If your daughter is into music, the Mac will be perfect, with great programs like iTunes and GarageBand. It's also great for photo and video, with iPhoto, iMovie HD and iDVD. If you daughter needs Microsoft Word, there is a Mac version of Microsoft Office, and it's actually better than the PC version. If you don't want to spend the extra money on Microsoft Office, there are several alternatives, which are free and compatible with Microsoft Office, such as OpenOffice or NeoOffice. With an Apple notebook, you'll get great battery life and great safety features, like the MagSafe power adapter, which keeps the notebook from falling on the floor when someone trips over the cord, or the Sudden Motion Sensor, which protects the hard drive should an actual fall take place. Don't let PC users tell you that there's a lack of software for the Mac. This isn't true. There may be thousands of calendar programs for the PC, but how many of them are any good? Two or three? Simply put, crap doesn't survive in the Mac market. Keep in mind, should your daughter ever actually need, or want, to run Windows, Macs can now dual boot with Windows XP, natively and at full speed. Macs actually run Windows XP better than most PCs, thanks to superior hardware. Let's not forget about the built in iSight camera. It's not a trivial thing, as the iSight camera is a very high quality camera, with NTSC resolution and auto focus. It looks great in comparison to my friend's PC webcam. I haven't even mentioned Mac OS X. Viruses? Despite what PC fans will tell you, they don't exist on the Mac. I haven't seen one in the three years of my Mac experience. PC users will try to tell you that it's due to Mac's "low market share". This is not true, either. Mac's owes it's great security to it's UNIX underpinnings. They will also tell you that Macs are more expensive. This is not true when you account for the fact that you'll have most of the software you'll ever need, right out of the box, and that you won't need to upgrade as often, if ever. It's all of the little details that make the Mac such a great joy to use, like spell checking, system wide, as you type. There's also a built-in dictionary that can be invoked upon any text in a few simple keystrokes. You can find a specific window when there are numerous open windows, with just the click of a button. There's fast, system wide searching, which finds results as you type. I could go on and on... If you have any specific questions, just send me a message. I'm always glad to help people realize that there's better alternatives to Microsoft.

For graphic presentations, the Mack is superior. For gaming the Windows PC is superior. PC's have more support. Go into any computer place and look at the comparison of area set aside for the PC versus the Mac. No comparison. PC's take up the whole store and Mac fits into a corner. Based on what you have written, I would stick with a Windows based PC.

I would recommend a Mac (and keep in mind that I am a windows user). Macs are more user friendly, especialy to people who don't have alot of computer savy. Also you don't have to deal with viruses and spyware like on the PC. Another great advantage is since Mac switched over to intel you have been able to run windows on a Mac, so any aplications that are Windows only can still be run.

Macs are easier to use, don't crash as often(once a year perhaps?), and don't need constantly updated virus software. PCs have more games available, and more very specific business software (warehouse management software, etc) which your daughter probably does not need. Macs have better graphics software, and everything is included--sound cards, software, graphics cards, etc. PCs are cheaper initially but then you have to add all kinds of extras to them, and the final price is about the same.
So if your daughter just needs basic school software (word, etc) and likes music, I'd get a Mac. It comes with music making and music listening software right out of the box, and she doesn't have to keep messing with virus control to keep the whole thing working.

It depends on what she is using it for. MACs come with GarageBand, so if she is into music like, producing and playing instruments, that's a great thing to have.
If she is into music, like downloading, MAC & Windows both have playlists.
If it is basic stuff, like school work and daily internet needs, save yourself the money and use Windows and get a really good virus program.
If she is using it for desing, get a MAC. MACs are great for anti virus, it's built in.
I have the new MAC and you can purchase a program called Parallels, which runs Windows on a MAC, so it is like having two computers.
I am a designer, both for web and our magazine.
I was introduced to a MAC this year, and the new ones come with a built in web cam and many features.
BUT if you don't need it for extravagent services, get Windows.
I think your daughter will be fine with Windows for now.

PC's will definately rule in the near future...there are too many programs that aren't compatible with Macs. However, if you do decide to go with a Mac, there is a program called Virtual PC that runs Windows XP over Mac OSX

Windows is definately better as there are much more windows application programs, utilities and games than Mac. For compatibility with most other machines, stick to PC (windows) and you won't go wrong.
