If I get a wireless router and wireless notebook card for my laptop, do I still need to have a cable modem to use the internet????

Yes you do.
The cable modem provides access to the outside world.

You hook your wireless router up to the cable modem (with a cable) and the router then broadcasts that internet access out to your house.

yes. the cable modem is what connects you to the interne. Your wireless router connects to your cable modem, and your wireless notebook connects to your router. If you get more then one computer than you can connect all those through your router. The router "routes" the Internet traffic to the correct computer. You need all the to use wireless technology.

Yes, that is were the internet connection is coming from not the wireless router. You will have to plug the router into the modem so the internet can be transmitted to your laptop.
