6 of the 7 members of the DeFeo family were shot and killed by Ronald "Butch" DeFeo jr, including his father Ron senior, Mother Louise, younger sisters Dawn and Allison and brothers Marc and John Mathew. The crime is not the center piece of the book "The Amityville Horror" written by author Jay Anson. The book focusses on the supposed haunting of the house as experienced by the Lutz family during their short stay in the home from December 18 1975 to January 14 1976. The crime itself occurred a year before George and Kathy Lutz moved into the home at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville NY, and was the inspiration for the book in which George and Kathy collaborated with Anson in writing via some 45 hours of taped recollections that were provided to the author by George and Kathy.

Yes its true that the family was shot by their crazy son. But the story of the ghosts etc. is false and it ranks as one of the biggest fake stories of our time. Everybody believed it at the time - I did too. Google it and you can read more.

I'm not sure of how many people were in the household, but I know that the father went crazy and killed everyone. I know someone who seen the house, she said the windows were boarded up and it looked creepy.
