Gift cards are evil!

You have these universal gift certificates that are good everywhere for anything called Cash, and you voluntarily convert them into less useful gift cards to be used at only one place, for only the stuff they carry, at only the price they offer. It makes no sense!

Not only that, depending on what state you live in, some gift cards actually expire or have maintenance fees, so that after 2 or 3 years, your $50 gift card is worthless. Cash never expires! Ever notice how you lose and find gift cards that were given to you. That doesn't happen with cash does it?

To happy2luv: mailing gift cards is no better. If it's lost in the mail, it's just like you lost the cash.

Visa or Amex gift cards are no better. Sure you have more choice where to use it, but you end up having to pay a $5 - $10 surcharge. In that case, it costs you $55 to give someone $50. Why not just give a $50 bill?

Gift Cards are decent alternative to cash. Albeit, most are limited to the store/company that they were purchased from, but in most cases, they are bought from these stores and given to people whom the giver knows will put them to use. More and more people carry plastic now a days anyhow (credit cards, debit cards, etc) No one uses cash much, so gift cards fit in to place easily. Keep in mind, there is the option of VISA/Mastercard, etc Gift Cards! Most Credit Card companies got into the act and offer tehir own branded gift cards. Give out these, instead of cash, and the receipient is not required to go to a specific store to redeem. They are free to go whereever!

Those cards that end up unused are not to be blamed on the gift cards, but those that toss them aside and forget about them.

I'm always losing cash... from one pocket to the next, into the washer or dryer...gift cards are great...I go to the fabric shop and pick what I want and the gift card takes care of the payment!!! I love gift cards!
If I got a gift card say from Macy's or some other store I would never shop in then I wouldn't like it. So there are 2 sides to gift cards!

Cash shows little thought or consideration. It almost seems a little tacky. Many times cash gets used on paying bills, necessities or with some people booze, drugs, or gambling. Suppose I want to give a movie buff a DVD but don't know what they have in their collection, I can give them a gift card and they can pick a movie that they like and don't already have.

If I do buy gift cards, I buy Visa gift cards. They can be used anywhere, not just one certain store :-p

and yes I have lost cash before and found it later. I do it all the time, never lost a gift card though.
