At the back of our television, there is an array of tangled cords...does it make a difference? Will it start a fire or anything?

If you have an overloaded receptacle, the multiple wires can cause a fire hazard. If the load is causing any fuses to blow or the combined load on the receptacle exceeds 15 Amps, you need to at least consider spreading the load to another circuit.

Tangled cords alone aren't the hazard, tho they tend to be esthetically repugnant. The hazard is any cord whose insulation is failing and a plug that is partally out of its receptacle (where you can see the metal prongs). Failing insulation or exposed metal prongs of plugs can inadvertently place electricity where it's not designed or wanted. Then you may get a short/shock/ or worst case electrocution.

Unless the cords are missing electrical insulation, no they are not a fire hazard. They are however, unsightly. Go to an electronics supply store and ask to see ''cord'' or ''wire management'' devices. There is a wide variety ranging from simple ''Tie-wraps'' to elaborate plastic sheathing available.

if they have poor insulation they are a problem...in some instances the electrical field they give off can effect one another and if there is something that is sensitive to a magnetic type of field it won't work as effectively
