DO NOT PANIC! It is very common for there to be blood in diarhea of infants. Their intestines are very sensitive. This is bright red blood only. Older dark blood needs to be assessed by a doctor. Just make sure the baby is peeing enough. If you are uncomfortable see a doctor.

1) Did you happen to give your baby any water. I did that at 4 months. He liked to play with a bottle of water while I did the dishes, then one day I looked over and he was chugging it. He had diarrhea for about 12 hours with blood and mucous. No water for baby!

2) Bacteria or virus. It will most likely clear up

3) Any unusual foods or medications. My friend's baby gets severe diarhea from gripe water. Which is really somthing gentle and safe, but all babies are different.

4) Any changes to your diet. You may want to right down what you ate for the last 24 hours. Then next time (which hopefully there won't be) you can compare. Generally people will blame it on milk. If you think it may be milk you need eliminate all milk and milk proteins (casein and whey on ingredient lists) for 6 weeks. This is the last thing on earth I, personally, would like to do. FYI it is the protein in cow's milk, not the lactose that infants are generally allergic to.

That's all I can think of. Check out www.kellymom.com or www.askdrsears.com

(Oh and you can give probiotics to a baby that young, just be sure to get the milk free ones and my midwife said 1/2 capsule twice a day. My baby loves it. Alternatively if you take it it should be in your breastmilk)

I disagree with the other lists...i mean it wouldnt hurt to call the pediatrician, but this is Christmas weekend and it will be hard to get in touch with someone and emergency room is probably not neccessary. I think this does have to do with breastfeeding, i think your baby may have a tough time digesting milk proteins. by this i mean COW's milk proteins. Do you eat dairy? Has she been a healthy good eater up until this time? gaining weight? does she seem like she is in pain right now? Try having NO dairy products (this is milk proteins...not lactose) so even heavy cream, etc...lay off of it for at least three days and see what changes. It is not really known how long it takes for food to move through your system, then the milk etc...so three days is usually the cut off....the other 'offending' issue could be gluten which is found in - god like everything we eat...LOL its in bread products, lots of people are very sensitive to it. I know its hard to change your diet completely around, but these are two things that can often cause problems for nurslings. It doesnt mean you have to stop nursing, just lay off first the dairy, then the wheat, and see if it makes a difference. If your pediatrician panics and says to stop nursing...get a second opinion, maybe from a lactation consultant....remember, your babies overall health will tell you how serious this is or ISNT. good luck!

Baby could just be a little constipated and may have a little rip and the blood got in the poo. It is fine as long as it is trace amounts and not happening often.
If the poop is hard and not mushy then that is most likely what happened.

You need to take the baby to the doctors straight away. They will need to do some tests so take a sample of the poo with you in a sterile container.

Go to the doctor.

It could be because of something you ingested affecting your baby, either way this is an issue a doctor needs to address.

My son had that and he was allergic to milk. Milk protien allergy. I had to change his formula to soy. Since your breastfeeding this might be a concern for you. It can also be a virus or something.Your pediatrician should give you some good advice - they will test her poop to either rule out or confrim she is sick. Hope she gets better.

Take your baby to the doctor cuz breastfeeding would not have anything to do with it unless something is wrong with you.
