No, the Hungarian currency is the Forint, the current exchange rate is roughly HUF375 to the pound or 195 to the US dollar. They hope to adopt the euro in 2010 but this may not happen due to the recent unrest.

Despite what the previous poster said I don't recommend taking travellers cheques of any kind, even AmEx. They are quite difficult to convert in Budapest; no bank I could find would touch them. The only bureau de change I could find which would accept them was located in Vaci utca, which is pretty central but you'd do better not having to go there every couple of days.

You will do better either taking an ATM card which you can use overseas as there are plenty of ATMs in central Budapest, or taking currency (euros or US dollars) across and converting it to Forints as needed. Hard currency is always accepted in banks...

The dominant form of currency in Budapest Hungry is called a Forint. One us dollar ($1) is equal to $191.770 Forint onanda.com P.S. since you are traveling overseas here is the number for Visa international, it might come in handy. The reason that i am giving you this number is because i think that you have to have a Visa in order to get a passport 1-800-847-2911 P.S.
