Despite what the previous poster said I don't recommend taking travellers cheques of any kind, even AmEx. They are quite difficult to convert in Budapest; no bank I could find would touch them. The only bureau de change I could find which would accept them was located in Vaci utca, which is pretty central but you'd do better not having to go there every couple of days.
You will do better either taking an ATM card which you can use overseas as there are plenty of ATMs in central Budapest, or taking currency (euros or US dollars) across and converting it to Forints as needed. Hard currency is always accepted in banks...
