The shortest distance I can find is 1336.4 statute miles (2150.8 km) from the Mediteranean shore at the Libya/Tunisia border, and a point near Lydd (East of Brighton) at the southern entrance to the Channel.

If you know two positions (LAT and LONG):

Cos(DIST) = Sin(LAT1)*Sin(LAT2) + Cos(LAT1)*Cos(LAT2)*Cos(P)

Where DIST is the distance expressed as an angle (a nautical mile is defined as one minute i.e., 1/60 of a degree), and
P is the difference in longitude (P is the Polar angle: the angle the two meridians make at the Pole). This equation would be perfect if Earth were an exact sphere. In practice, it is good enough for navigation (sea or air).
