The continent?
A single large landmass with two distinct lobes, South and North America, joined by a relatively narrow isthmus.
The subcontinent of North America contains Canada, the United States of America and Mexico. Sometimes Panama is included. In Central and South America there are many more countries, ranging vastly in size, from Brazil downwards.
Early replies seem to have assumed without hesitation that you were only referring to the United States of America. That is, perhaps, a little worrying.
Definitions beyond the physical are tricky.
A nation is probably beyond definition.
It has its ideals, and its actual practice. It contains more than one culture and way of seeing itself.
It's very history will be a source of contention:
(For the USA, is that "The Civil War, or "The War or Northern Aggression"?) An election will be a defeat for some, a victory for others.
A sketch of a country, or an impression of it, might be all that can really be achieved.
The world is usally defined (often as "the whole world")
as the entire globe of the earth. The term can refer to the totality of the human population. Deriving from this usage smaller "worlds" can be specified: "The world of the dinosaurs" "The world of stamp collectors."

Americo Vespucii mapped the first known harbors and eastern coast of America. Far from that America has become the nation of "Can do anything" a melting pot of different ethnicity, ideals, and religions. You can do anything you want in America to better your self, less hurting someone. Even though we slowly give up our freedoms to our government everyday, we are still the best game to be had. Not to mention when disasters happen all over the world the people of America are the first to give as much as possible, equating to more than double any other nation contributions. You can have your opinions of the government but don't condemn the people.

America has nice people allowing free thoughts, seemingly nice government, they might allow free expression but there is no reaction to it, they ignore the lot of the mass and so it doesn't matter how much you speak if your thoughts are not heard, there are also quite a bit of realigous fanatics, like Bush and the 50%> who voted for him, but I don't blame them beacuse the Democratic party is no better offering no great change in policy, preety much the Same Parties DEmocrats=Republicans which translates to a seeming democracy but actually a dictatorial system but they cleverly manipulate this by allowing people to vote the same party because democrats and republicans are the same as an act of symbolism and nothing more, no great change in any policy. The world, South is poor, North is rich, 60% of the world wealth is in the hands of 5% and 40% is in the hands of the 95%. 3 billion people live on $2/day.
