Slim and None.
I'm all for voluntary simplicity, and giving the gift of your time or services vs. a store bought gift, but the bottom line is people like seeing kids open and play with new toys on X-mas. It's just awkward to not buy your family and loved ones gifts. My side of the family has been trying to do that for 3 years now, and we always fail.
Besides, I don't like the idea of a buy-nothing day. I'd rather it be "Don't buy any crap you don't NEED" day.
But if you really want to do a new thing that I think would be a good idea, make it a "No Gift Card" Christmas. There are just so many things wrong with gift cards. I can't understand why people give them.
You have these universal gift certificates that are good everywhere for anything called cash, and you voluntary convert them into less useful gift cards to be used at only one place, for only the stuff they carry. It makes no sense. Not only that, depending on what state you live in, some gift cards actually expire or have maintenance fees, so that after 2 or 3 years, your $50 gift card is worthless. Cash never expires! Ever notice how you lose and find gift cards that were given to you. That doesn't happen with cash does it?

Well there is a small group that already does that. They're called Jehovah's Witnesses. They don't celebrate Christmas. I've also heard of a movement of people who have gone to "make one small gift for your close family members only" tradition. Wish I knew what it was called.
The chances for it becoming widespread are small because our country is a capitalist one, and so it would be harmful to businesses who depend on making profits at this time of year. So, as long as corporate America has such huge influence over us all, we'll all be spending money and many of us going into debt over a simple religious celebration.

Well many people already practice alternative gift giving (giving to charities in people's honor) while it may not be exactly what your thinking the sentiment is kind of the same, only better because instead of just useless denial of materialism it is denial with a purpose.
