physically hibernation and power off is the same. it doesn't need any power from the battery to hold the hibernation status.

hibernation means all data from the ram (the current actual status of all running processes) is stored to the hard disk just before the laptop shut down. Hibernation is a status to be defined in the power options.

the OS checks on every startup if this status is set to "on" and if there is a valid hibernation file (this file will be marked as invalid when doing a normal shut down). if the file is valid, then it goes to a different boot procedure, where the content of the hibernation file is stored back to the ram.

so it doesn't matter if you transport your laptop in hibernation mode or turned off.

It should be completely safe to do that. Hibernation mode is like a cross between the computer being shut off and the computer being on. As long as the power cord is plugged in, the battery is always charging not matter if it's on or off, and nothing bad should ever happen. Hibernation mode is no different.

On hibernation saver is a complete snap-shot of the current state of the OS is saved to disk and the whole machine shut down. The harddisk is temporary turned off and parked. The only downsides to hibernation is you lose your RAM worth of hibernation partitoned diskspace to the hibernation file. The advantage is you can save some battery power as compared to putting it into suspend mode.

ya, its basically the same as being shut down, it just saves everything that was in ram to the hard drive so it can shut everything off, and whenever xp boots, it checks to see if it is coming out of a hibernation and if it is then it loads the stuff its supposed to into ram

i think the guy below me is wrong :D

yes, but it still draws some power from the battery while it's in hibernate mode. it uses very little energy, but your battery will probably run out of juice within a day or two.
