Frost free, are usually called self defrost. They are the most convenient but there are drawbacks.Self defrost are more expensive and has more to go wrong. Timer,defrost heater,defrost thermostat and fan motor. Basic manual defrost will give good service with less chance of failure. A chest freezer is the most efficient since cold air drops and stays in when you open the door. Uprights take up less room. If you cannot keep an upright full. Store empty boxes milk jugs and empty coolers, anything that will occupy space. This will lower the amount of warm air entering the freezer when the door is opened.
