At this point, my favorite "news" show is on Comedy Central. I don't do any other television news because at least on the Daily Show or the Colbert Report, they don't pretend to be looking that hard for real news. They know that it's all about entertainment, and they admit it freely. In the meantime, because they are political satire, they often take the time to report the absurdities around us with terrifying clarity.
The news networks, I fear, have become sensationalist, and that will not change. Not while we demand that they shake our shoulders in order to get our attention. The Associated Press and Reuters are largely the same collective that controls all of our press, and getting stories from these sources is far easier than going out and searching for news yourself. So they're all one organism that we label the media and sit tight while they continue to spew garbage at us and ignore the hard stuff that we as a nation need to face in order to get ourselves straightened out again.
But we, of course, as citizens in a free market society, are complicit in our own obsolesence. We allow no market to satisfy us unless it is as convenient as possible. So our news is soundbites that we can digest easily so that we can move on with our lives.
Bah.
