The iTunes Store has some free music available. Check the iTunes Store on Tuesdays. Otherwise it's only 99c per song.
You can also move ("rip") your CDs to iTunes.

Anything else is illegal, and may even put virusses on your computer.

I use BitTorrent, but that's pretty complicated. Get Limewire like everyone else.
