The real answer is that they used some kind of adhesive, since there's no string (like ALL masks from that timeline would), but I'd like to know what the movie answer is.

First off it was a well preformed movie. And the awnser is that they put fake skin around it and then they stuck it to the actors face.

I believe just an elastic band over the ears (like a bandit mask).
