Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and, Roosevelt are some of my favorites.
The current generation of presidents (the last 40 years or so)seem to have forgotten what the job duties for US President actually are.

George Washington (first president, lead colonies to victory in revolutionary war)
Thomas Jefferson (wrote declaration of independence and the greatest classical liberal [libertarian] in American History)

Abraham Lincoln (freed the slaves)

i'll go with Lincoln. he had nothing to gain but fought for abolition and the union with everything to lose.

from reading biographies of the greatest, my favorite has always been Lincoln.
