Not nearly as old as most think. Most scientists and geologists adhere to a concept called 'Uniformaterianism' which basically states that all process, weather, vulcanism, ice ages, geological activity proceed at the same rate now that they always had. Nothing could be further from the truth. The earth's history is punctuated with numerous catastrophic events, mass die offs of animals suddenly, violent volcanic eruptions, asteroid strikes, worldwide catastrophic floods that inundated entire land masses. The last Yellowstone eruption alone destroyed most life in a good part of the US.
