A lot of Hitchcock is very much in this vein. Oh, boy, his classic "The Birds" just scared the pants off of me. I visit my sister in Houston in the winter, and there are all the birds, sitting on telephone wires . . . I have to do Lamaze to make it through the traffic (-:. All thanks to Hitchcock.

The Others, The Exorcist of Emily Rose, The Mothman Prophecies, The Vanishing ... even I don't think they are scary now, but it's hard to find a psychological horror/thriller anymore that has any substance to the scare.

The best psychological thriller I have ever seen was A Tale Of Two Sisters.
It's a Korean flick with subtitles. It stayed with me for days after I watched it!

The Exorcist or the exorcist the beginning. Constantine is pretty good too.

'The Shining'. It's scary because of the atmosphere of the setting and there's little gore.
