Firstly the X is an assay office mark.Firstly you must say weather the X is in a certain shape. If as you say they are from Birmingham, then they should have the shape of a shield, for 1795-6 bold letter. or Italic in shield, for 1821-2. or a square with no corners on 1846-7. a circle 1872-3.Back to bold letters in a square, no corners1897-8.Now if it is a top of a square no corners, and the bottom is straight with a dip in the middle,1922-3.Again this shape is also with normal light letters is 1947-8.Finally squiqly top and bottom with wavy X 1972-3.
These are Assay date letters for /birmingham, anywhere else , they will differ. Hope this helps define its year.
