this is a huge debate! you will get many ARE YOU CRAZY! comments, but honestly one glass wont hurt you, my friend had a glass at least once a week to help her sleep, not what is too much, i cant say, but i had at least 3 glasses my whole 9 months, and both my babies came out fine, one is healthy 3 years old and as crazy as any 3 yr old, my my 3 month old is wonderful and progressing nicely. sometimes you just have cravings and trust me, they WONT go away till you satisfy it, just dont over do it, and dont get drunk! i am sure it will help you sleep like before you got pregnant!

NO! Please don't do that! You are doing the right thing by giving up smoking and NOT drinking ANYTHING! It is not healthy for your baby! I understand how hard it can be as I am a mother of 3. I,too gave up smoking while i was pregnant and it is not easy AT ALL. You will feel like these 9 months (well truthfully 10 months) will go on forever and will never come to an end. But it does and you will have that little bundle in your arms!!! I know it is hard thing to go through when you are doing it, just remember you are doing it for YOUR BABY NOT YOU. When your day comes and you are holding your little one in your arms for the first time it WILL all be worth it, and you will tell yourself "THIS IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT AND WHY I KNEW I COULD DO IT!!!!!" YOU WILL LOOK INTO THAT SWEET LITTLE BABY'S EYES AND THAT REWARD WILL BE SOOO MUCH GREATER THAN THAT GLASS OF WINE AND OR THAN CIGARETTE!!!

CONGRATS ON THE NEW BABY AND GOOD LUCK!!
(If you give me your e-mail address I will show you the best reward ever!!!!)

I think that one glass wouldn't be harmful, although it may affect the baby more since you are still in the first trimester. It seems that every time I am with other people who are drinking wine they are encouraging me to have a glass and it irritates me. Everyone keeps telling me that a glass of red wine every once in a while is good for you while you're pregnant, but I just don't want to chance it.

I'm sorry. it's different for everyone. i attended a lecture by a mother of a fetal alcohol syndrome child. she never drank alot, just a little, because she said back then they said it was alright, just as you have heard.

and it's not just FAS you should be worried about. Alcohol is MORE dangerous to your baby than heroin, cocaine, you name it. I was shocked to hear this.

But even greater, that little glass could be the difference between a child with ADHD etc. The woman who spoke said that she figured it was alright because she gave birth to two other children before the birth of her FAS child and had drank just a little glass or two during both pregnancies.
But she says she notices now both kids have tiny problems like ADHD and problems most people would never assume was the result of alcohol.

When you drink alcohol during your pregnancy, you're playing with hot water. Sure, nothing may happen, it may be just fine. But the other possibilities, subtle things, whatever, are most certainly not worth it. Your baby's drinking what you drink. Do you think a toddler could handle a glass of wine? Then I don't think an unborn baby can handle it either

My sister's gynecologist told her that it was better for a mother to smoke only about 3-4 cigarettes/day if she really can't stop smoking because the baby will feel if she is tensed, and it is important that you do not feel tense.

In your case, please don't start smoking again. You seem to be doing ok with that one! What I mean is, yes, drink one glass of wine, above all if it's good wine. But don't do it very often, though. Maybe once every ... 3 months! And if you drink tonight, try not to drink at Christmas or New Year, as you'll be tempted to drink more than one!!!

Then again, I'm not a doctor and never had a kid, so... But I don't think it would harm the baby if you drink ONE glass. Just ONE!

There is no safe amount of alcohol to have during pregnancy, I don't know why some people seem to think there is. Just because people have had a drink or two during pregnancy and the baby has suffered no (apparent) ill-effects, doesn't mean it's safe, it means THEY GOT LUCKY!

Here is a great article on the subject:

My favourite quote from the article:
"Ask yourself this: If you poured yourself a glass of wine, would you pour one for your baby as well? It sounds ludicrous, but in effect, that's what you do when you drink during your pregnancy."

People will tell you it's ok to have one here or there... but my personal opinion is NO WAY. They do NOT know exactly how much will do harm to the baby. So why would you want to risk it? I stayed away from it during my pregnancy- and caffiene too... never did drugs or smoked ciggs either. Goodluck on whatever you decide... but really, do you want to take the risk? If so, go ahead!

My OB doctor (female) drank a glass of wine every day of her 3 pregnancies. Her children are perfectly fine and normal. She has told me that I can do the same... drink one glass every day. Do you think if she was seeing ill-effected children as a result of this that she would continue to dispense this advice?

So far I have only had maybe a glass every three weeks or so... but that one glass is so good!!!

If you want it... have it... just only have 1

I've heard it's okay, but i wouldn't and didn't. what if something happened to the baby you may end up blaming yourself for having a glass of wine. At least you quit smoking. good luck

no. you really dont want to risk anything do you?
even one glass can be harmful to your baby.
think about it. is one glass going to make you happy enough to deal if your baby is born with fetal alcohol syndrome?
if your baby has some sort of deficiency for the rest of its life?
dont do something you might regret...
go have some chocolate milk instead...it tastes better!
