it's a dvd player inside. it plays dvd's fine.

yes my sister has one and doesn't own a dvd player at all. You do need the remote control for dvd that they sell to work it as a player.

yep most dvd's will play on a PS2, but i suggest that you buy a special DVD controller for the PS2....you can buy one from GAME if you are in the uk.
