Charlie Rangle (D-New York) is the person behind the talk of reinstating the draft. He actually put out a the proposition 3 times in the House of Representatives so far. Last year, the Republicans called his bluff by calling for a vote in the House, and he even voted against it. I've heard him several times as a guest on the Sean Hannitty talk show and he laughs about it, saying he knows it'll never actually be reinstated. He says he puts the proposals out to 'strike fear in the Republicans' in the house, showing them that their 'rich' and 'privileged' children won't be immune to the draft if they don't change the present course of the military ... meaning that if we don't pull out of Iraq, we'll need the draft to keep troop levels up and the 'rich kids' will get drafted too. He explained that when the Republicans realize that they won't be immune to being drafted, they'll vote to get out of Iraq to protect their children from the draft.
Typical Dem ... they hate the successful and wealthy of the country (the Republicans, in their eyes), they want to strip them of their earned wealth and distribute their money among all of us, make us all the same, and establish an 'entitlement system' where we all depend on the government for our very existence! All to prove his pointless point ... which is nothing.
Bush has never stated any interest in the draft.

It is not the democrats that want to bring it back, they were the first to know that the war is not being won and there should be some sort of timetable that the Iraq prime minister must adhere to so our troops can come home, the one that is screaming we will not leave until the job is done and we have victory is the one that is ultimately responsible for bringing back the draft as we do not have enough troops now to do what is needed we are going to send in 30-40,000 more

Well Democrat Charlie Rangel of NY introduced a bill to reinstate the draft for the 3rd time. He did so in 2002 and 2003-4 I think. In 2004, there was a rumor that Bush was going to reinstate the draft after the 2004 election. There was an email going around to college aged voters claiming this and a link to Rangel's bill. The GOP house put it to a vote in order to dispell the rumor and all but 2 congressmen voted No. Murtha was one of them who voted yes. Rangel didn't even vote for his own bill...so it's hard to believe he's serious this time around. Since the Democrats took over congress I have no clue why Rangel would put the bill forward again, especially claiming that it would prevent war (which is retarded...look at Vietnam and WWII).

Perhaps the motive behind the suggestion is to get people talking. When decisions that government more directly effects you it gets people involved. The majority of Americans do not pay attentions to politics and it was a way to try and get people motivated.
Of course is you listen to the talk about it now, Dems and Reps alike are against this idea. Ofcourse this makes sense b/c if we had a draft, the governenment would not be able get us into wars as easily. If there were a draft the people would require a much better reason for war than the gargabe reasons they come up with now.

Once again, the entire political party (whether democrat or republican), always gets blamed for supporting something even if it is just one Senator or Representative. The draft is an opinion of a senator who wants to use the draft as a tool to wake up Congress and readjust their opnion on the war by bringing fear to them that one of their family members could be drafted. Doesn't mean they'll show up or go to war, but their lucky number will be picked. It is a bad idea.

Charlie Rangel is a real doofus. This substitute right into a political ploy on his area final year, with the intention to deliver interest to the form of minorities serving interior the protection rigidity. He claims too many Black each and every person is almost compelled into the protection rigidity by using financial circumstances. because it grew to become out, the minorities are represented proportionally interior the protection rigidity yet Rangel would not opt to hearken to it. He purely won't be able to understand that many youngsters are proud to serve their u . s . a ., an thought that's thoroughly foreign places to him.

They don't. They're just trying to use it as a political issue. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) introduced a draft bill in the house, and it only got two votes, Stark and Murtha. Rangel himself didn't even vote for it.
Democrats voted against the draft 186-2.

1st-it's only 1 democrat trying to reinstate the draft
2nd-there is a difference between liberal and democrat
3rd-liberals don't say that Bush wants to reinstate the draft, but instead say it is the only viable solution they see that he could do do to help our overstretched military.

There's on;y one Democrat calling for the draft - Charlie Rangel.
The reason is that it shouldn't be only the poor, black and brown fighting for America.
There should be a lot of rich white people in the military, you know. sorta like the twins.

The idea is that ALL classes, not just the working class, would be represented in the military if there was a draft. And if that were the case, rich people with the powerful influence wouldnt be as quick to send their offspring to get killed.
