bathroom placement has no effect on the smell. just make sure you flush regularly and even use the sink and tub regularly so the traps underneath get flushed out.

Clean your bathroom with disinfectant cleaners, empty trash and that will keep it clean and germ free. Open the window occasionally if you have one - it helps.
