Some of the answers already here would confuse anyone.

In simple terms, the uncircumcised penis has a skin fold over the head (glans, the purple part at the top which is covered up).

Circumcision is the removal of the skin covering the head or glans of the penis. It is the male organ which has two functions: (1) to carry pee from the bladder to the toilet and (2) after puberty to carry semen with the sperm that fertilize the female egg and leads to the birth of a baby. The circumcised penis has a head that is exposed and not covered.

It is easier to keep clean. It keeps its sensitivity. Many people, including myself and my wife, think it looks better.

In the United States as well as in many other parts of the world circumcising the new born male is very common. It is simple surgery and takes about 10 minutes to do. Now days the infant is given a local pain killer and therefore feels nothing. The circumcision heals in a few days. After puberty the penis begins to grow and the circumcised head flares out thus increasing the number of nerve endings there as well as those along the shaft, the white, black, and other colors,of the penis below the head.

The circumcised male, who has sex with a woman having HIV, is less likely to be infected. A circumcised male doesn't have to
worry about a foreskin that is too tight or about a penis that has repeated irritation because of bacterial or viral infections under the foreskin.

It is a good idea for all males to be circumcised. All males in my family are. Most all males in my high school and college were. In the United States about 85% or more of males are circumcised.

A lot of men who weren't circumcised as infants have it done later. There are no age restrictions. Again a pain killer is used. There is no pain. There may be some discomfort afterward. It is an outpatient procedure done by a urologist. Most men go back to work or school in a week or ten days.

Circumcision is a very old practice going back thousands of years. The Egyptians had it done. The Jews picked up the custom from the Egyptians, and God made it a sign of the covenant. It is done on the 8th day after birth. Muslims also practice circumcision. For them it can be done anytime between infancy and 18 years of age.

Some things are not true about male circumcision:

(1) Female circumcision is not true circumcision but MUTILATIION (total removal) of the female genitals. It is a terrible thing to do and needs to be banned everywhere.

(2) Male circumcision is NOT mutilation. It is really simple cosmetic surgery.

An uncircumsized (natural) penis has a sheath of skin (the foreskin) that extends from a short distance behind the corona (the ridge of the head, or glans) to the end of the glans. It covers, protects and lubricates the end of the penis.

The foreskin is not just skin, it contains several other structures that are important, but not critical, to normal sexuality.

It is routine in many areas to remove the foreskin shortly after birth, or in some cultures around puberty. For babies this is normally done without painkillers. Occasionally the doctor will make a mistake and cut the skin too short resulting (eventually) in painful erections. Rarely a major mistake will result in amputation of the penis, sometimes followed by sexual reassignment surgery.

There are many reasons for the procedure, some religious, traditional or health-related (for example, research shows that circumsision reduces the spread of HIV). Many people are strongly opposed to this elective surgery.

You can find websites with pictures detailing the difference as well as the form and function of the foreskin (for people who've never seen one, or who have an abnormal one). There are also websites detailing non-surgical methods to 'restore' a foreskin by tensioning the skin on the shaft of the penis to stimulate growth. This can create a convincing appearance of a foreskin and replicate much of the original functionality, but it cannot recreate the unique structures of the original foreskin or replace the lost nerves.

For Jews and Muslims it is a religious ritual. It is rare except among those religious groups in Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. In the United States it became popular in the 19th Century as a method to keep boys from masturbating. It didn't work, but then somebody decided it was more "hygienic," a falsehood many people still believe. (With or without foreskin, regular bathing is needed, and nothing more or less.)

In parts of Africa where HIV is epidemic and condom use uncommon, circumcision has been found to decrease the hetrosexual spread of the disease from appallingly high to moderately high. It does not have any impact on HIV related to homosexual transmission or needle-sharing, which are associated with most HIV in other parts of the world.

The genital integrity movement has fought the routine mutilation of babies, who, after all, have not consented to having a normal body part removed. Routine infant circumcision is illegal in Sweden. Other countries should follow this enlightened example.

It is the removing of the foreskin of the penis; it is said to be better for your health, but i can't prove it, i've just heard it. It was originally a religious thing; all male Jews were to be circumsized on their eighth day of life. Now, most are circumsized simply out of care for their personal hygeine.

As far as Judaism, it's a religous procedure and the ceremony, the Bris, is a token of the covenant between God and Abraham. It's also done for reasons of hygiene. It's easier to clean and keep clean the penis without the foreskin. It can also be done for cosmetic reasons according to the customs of the country or culture. And, circumcision reduces the chances of developing penile cancer therefore it can also be performed for reasons of health.

Every year it seems like a different group is in vogue. Lately doctors are saying that it is innapropriate and that it is unnecessary torture. If you insist you want a baby boy circumcised, the Canadian system makes you pay for it too.
However, just recently I read that instances of AIDS are much lower in circumcized men, and that they have a plan to fight the spread of disease in some African countries by promoting circumcision.

Traditionally it has been a Jewish religious rite. I think that according to Jewish teachings, it represented cleanliness. However, over the past century, it has gained prominence and is now used widely for health reasons.
