I got an offer from an international growing investment management firm to work in their Tokyo branch for 4,500,000 YEN / year which equals to $38,000!! A big slap on the face considering the company is pretty reputable on Wall St.
I got another offer in one of the Big 4 accounting firms for $55,000 in the west coast. Which you were me, which one would you choose?

ps. if anyone knows the average salary in Tokyo for finance, that will be a very helpful information.

You need to research the cost of living in both areas before you make a decision. $55K/yr in San Jose will probably have you living on peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you are paying your own rent. You also need to understand the tax situation. If you work the Tokyo job, are the USA and Japan both going to tax your income?

It isn't how much you make that counts, it's how much you can keep.

Hellifino the big confused beast. The money is irrelevant and there is absolutely no way anybody can answer this but you.

This is a life defining moment when you must decide what experience would make you happiest and fulfill your need to be the kind of person you want to be.

Living in Tokyo would be an experience which might be mind expanding or hellish. Living on the west coast would not have the risk factor of going either way. It is the safe way to go and it is more money.

Do you want to be safe or do you want a thrill? If you don't have an open mind and a flexible personality think twice about going Tokyo way.

If I was you, I would accept the offer for $55 on west coast. The average salary in Tokyo is approximately $50 k of U.S.. I would also inquire about the incentives and bonuses in both jobs. Sometimes, the company will pay for house, car and children tuition (for reputable school) for an employee working for their international branch, so if your company is going to do that then I think at the end, both of these offers are equally lucrative.

It's really going to have to be determined by what you want and the cost of living in the two areas. It's would be a valuable experience to live in Japan, I would love to have that opportunity but if $38K is not a workable salary then perhaps you may want to go for the west coast. However, the real estate prices are beyond belief out there and if you're planning to purchase a home $55K may not be enough for you. Good luck with your decision!

I must admit, it would be pretty cool to live in Tokyo, but I hear the cost of living is pretty high there too. I guess it all depends on where you are in your life and where you see yourself. I say if you are not leaving behind too much in your current life, "To Tokyo I go!!". Once in a lifetime experience.
