Some banks (or credit unions) offer FREE student checking. Sounds like your best bet!

ps

If you are interested in building credit, and getting a bank credit card, alot of insitutions offer great credit card programs with student checking. That is how I started to build my credit.

Free checking means you must always have a minimum balance. For example, if your checking account balance never goes below $10,000, then you write all your checks free. Also, if your balance never goes below the minimum, you get a miniscule rate of interest on the amount. "Caramba! I got $1.27 this month alone!"

Pardon: I think that you are Hispanic and a university student. In that case, the best is free checking. You must ask what is the minimum balance and then you must maintain that balance, no matter what. This may be hard for you. Maybe it's only $1000. The other is worse.

Student checking: Hola! Deposit your money! We pay no interest. If you write a check, we charge a fee. If you deposit money, we charge a fee. If you smile at a bank teller...

I truly wish you well as you navigate your university education.
