A less obvious but very interesting and important topic is the Erie Canal. For one thing the completion of the Erie Canal ensured that New York City would be the dominant metropolis of North America and eventually replace London as the leading economic center of the world. No Erie Canal, no World Trade Center. Think about that!

slavery is a good one. use things such as the establishemt of new territories (states) and discuss popular sovereignty, the right granted by the federal government to allow settlers in a certain territory to decide on their own issues. issues such as slavery. also talk about things such as the missouri compromise and the dred scott decision. the missouri comprimise had something to do with admitting missouri into the union as an anti-slave state and the dred scott decision was about a slave from missouri, dred scott, who's master took him to a northern free territory and then sued his master because he thought that he should be allowed freedom in a free state. the supreme court ruled against scott in a 7:2 decision and he remained a slave. this also determined that the missouri compromise was unconstitutional because since slaves were considered property, it denied one's right to own property such as the slaves. there's a start. good luck!
