you forgot arbitrator?

i am a mediator and a mediator is a person who helps two conflicting parties come to a mutually agreeable solution.
often there is legal action or the threat of legal action between the parties. it could be divorce, small claims or a discrimination complaint against employer. it could even be victim/offender mediation after someone is convicted for example of murdering your loved one, you can meet with them to try to come to some understanding so hatred doesn't ruin your life. with the help of a mediator. there are many forms of mediation. some are voluntary. in some the mediator is totally neutral, sometimes the mediator "evaluates" the merits of the "case" and will tell the parties how strong the case is in an attempt to get them to settle. i am a trained mediator. i know this end.

i think a negotiator is a person who gets involved in creating a deal. for example a big real estate deal or corporate buyout to hegotiate the terms and try to get a financial advantage for the client. it's the same process; getting two parties to agree to one solution. so i don't really know much about this end.

Typically a mediator is a neutral person who tries to help separate parties work out their differences. A negotiator tries to work with another party to get what they want using give and take - think of negotiating to buy a house or car - you as the negotiator have a vested interest.

only one difference.

A mediator is a third party helping others negotiate.

A negotiator is one of the other parties with something to personally gain.
