The easy answert is to protect thier feet! Hoof cracks can pose a really horrible problem for horse!! If a crack appears and is not cared for then it could spread and go to the coranet band which is the fleshy part at the top of the hoof. If this happens the horse could be lame for life!

It used to be believed that bar horseshoes were better on the horses hooves however, there is evidence they are not as good as they once thought they were. It has been found that in some cases, the nails are cutting off circulation in the horses hoof.
Polyurethane horse shoes are now showing promise to be better on the horse because when the horses hoof lands on the ground, there is a bit of a cushion to absorb some of the shock. Some people have left these shoes on 24/7 and these people have reported their horses feet are a little tender. Personally, I would recommend polyurethane horse shoes for walking on asphalt, cement, slick surfaces such as floors, and across rocks.

M'am horses wear shoes for the same reason you do. No, not to look pretty but to protect their hooves. If a horse steps on a stone it hurts them. Horses in stables wear shoes so that the hard floors don't hurt them.

Some horses have brittle feet like we humans have brittle nails. Ther feet are like our nails. The shoes protect the hoof from spillting and carcking which can severly hurt the animal, causing infections and other issues. Typically a horse that gets shawed (shoes put on) is a working animal. The shoe protects from injury to the frog (soft tissue located in a triangular formation in the center of the foot) by rocks and other objects. There are all kinds of shoes for horses surprisingly. Some have cleats or studs on them (like a soccer cleat) others have full coverage on the bottom with rubber padding for shock absorbtion.
Any other questions please feel free to ask!

The shows help raise their feet above the ground a little bit. They have a very tender sensitive part in the middle of their foot called a frog, and shoes prevent rocks and sticks from hitting it. They alsohelp balance the horse if the horses feet are slightly unbalanced.

Horses have shoes to correct their feet or to keep them in good condition. Some horses can't wear the nail on shoes, they must wear slip on.

despite length the horse desires, from tiny minis, by way of ponys and often happening length horses, to very super draft horses. The farrier suits the shoe to the horse, utilising a shoe clean he thinks will come close. Google this and study the wikipedia article...tremendously exhaustive.

They don't have to, but some horse breeds have hooves that are more brittle than others.
Either way, all horses' hooves are susceptible to being split or cracked, and if this happens, serious health issues could arise. For that reason, shoes are put on them to help protect them.

the same reason we wear them, to protect their feet, and stop their hoves wearing down to fast. there like finger nails, only 100 times as thick. they chip and break and could hurt terribly they also kind of help the horse to not slip, if you were not wearing any shoes on a wet raod you might slip, but if you have shoes on you would probably be ok.

They don't have to but most owners prefer to have shoes on their horses because it protects their feet from cracking, this can lead to infections and diseases if exposed.
