You have got lots of answers and its fair enough to understand the fact the poverty is neither curse nor destiny, its just a situation, an unpleasant situation. Destiny matters off course but it is not responsible for poverty and there are a lot of criteria which changes with lots of factors like location, needs, choice etc. Like in America a person who income is low than some thousand dollars is considered as poor but a person who is in US is incomparable with those in India.
Poverty is a choice of poor, though indirectly but it is a choice, a poor will curse god and society for his condition but if he struggle and do hard work he can easily overcome. And conditions are very favourable in current period.
A curse and destiny isn't changeable but situation is.

Poverty is when a person has socio-economic status below the average.
Top will not stand without the bottom, everyone has to be at some level. At the top the only way to go is down, at the bottom the only way to go is up. In between its constantly dynamic.
Based on all that, I don't think poverty is a curse or destiny.
It should be more like a phase, barring apathy, ignorance, in some cases inability.

Poverty shows selfishness of people in a society. If you have love you will show by your deeds. When tsunami, earthquake, floods or any other calamity occurs only christian organisations immediately go there and help people than the government. This shows love (not selfish). If all help others, poverty no more.
Poverty makes one to commit sin. Most of the crimes occur due to selfishness of the other somehow. If more people are in poverty more danger to other. So everyone should help others so that they should not become bad.

The cause of poverty is suffering. To understand suffering and to put an end to suffering one must study and put into practice "The Four Noble Truths AND The Noble Eightfold Path." Then poverty which stems from suffering, is put to an end, and everyone in life will thus have Peace and Happiness. And that is what all humanity really longs for !!

Poverty is just something real to deal with. If you say curse or destiny it sounds like there's nothing to do about it...

poverty isn't a fate . because only peoples determine their decisions . for example imagine that you were a rich man, someone cames nearby and wanted your all money, would you give your all money to become poor.
ı think you cant . people have free thoughts in the world and these toughts can help us making decisions and these decions take us some where and some manners .
people only draw their destiny, they don't play like an actor or an actress. If it was like that we wouldn't be in the world.

it depends on where the poverty is happening. if it is in the USA and/or other well developed countries it is cause by pure laziness. in other less developed country there are very few ways of getting out of it if you are born into poverty, so that would just be a hand of cards that are delt. folks in the well developed countries for the most part have plenty of opportunities to dig themselves out of a hole, yet choose not to. hell, if a kid that is born into an impoverished family really wants to get out all they have to do is join the military once they finish up with HS, and they can start a new and better life.

Poverty and Wealth both are governed by destiny.
Some people are born rich yet they are poor when it comes to common sense and literacy. Many are born poor yet they are richer in knowledge and ablity than people who are richer than them.

it is neither.
it is the worst form of violence as Gandhi put it.
and indeed, for until there was a rich man nobody was poor.
for some it is just because they are lazy and refuse to work.
for others the simple fact is that their misfortune is a scourge upon them by the relentless society in which they live.
