You didnt run the internet connection wizard? Not enough details! You have a router or do you just connect directly to your modem?

It is possible that the problem is with your Ethernet adapter. Maybe your Ethernet Card is not compatible wih Windows XP, try updating the drivers.

If yor card works fine, check for any viruses that might blocking you or it could also be a Firewall, disable any Internet Security applications. And disable any proies. If your modem/router's activity LED flashes then it means your computer is connected.

If "Connected" is displayed under your LAN connection, right click and choose Status then click on Support and check if you have a valid IP address that looks like "xxx.xx.xx.xxx" or something like that. The problem could be with your ISP. If that doesn't work, try installing Firefox or Opera.

Good Luck!

You had to do something else, probably. Just "reinstalling Windows" won't necessarily make the computer faster. If you unplug the DSL modem power and let it sit for a few minutes and then plug it back in and into the computer, maybe that will reset and you can use it.
Usually, they have a disc you use to set it up, but often, you should be able to just plug the modem in and it should work. Make sure all the correct lights are on or blinking on the modem.

the operating system has no effect on networking components. this is what you need to do:

go to Network & Dial-Up connections: verify that your NIC card is set to Automatically Obtain an IP address (DHCP client). Turn off PC

Connect the Ethernet cable from the back of the DSL modem into the NIC card.

Reset your DSL modem. When the Link light is on turn on your PC.

Let the PC boot and check your IP connection:

Go to Start > Run > type ipconfig /all

see if you are getting an IP address from the DSL modem. Start troubleshooting from this point.

Go to your motherboards page and download the lan drivers, the other board drivers might be helpful for other things too.
