When I try having a conversation with people on the computer or in person, I usually ask them what music they like. If they like the same kind or band as me, I usually get interested in them.
Same with movies too.

Hi typically works but if the person is bashful or something, they may just say hi back and leave it at that. say hi and then start talking. dont leave much space between the initial hello and more of a sentence!

You should say hi to them and tell them your name. Then start talking about something cool like celebs or music. That will get every thing started.
