It will make a really soft noise without one, but to really hear what you are playing you do need an amplifier.

Yes you need an amp. Electric guitars don't have the soundhole like acoustics. So if you play without an amp you won't be able to hear much of anything.

You only have to use an amp if you enjoy annoying neighbors.
