I have searched and searched and have not been able to find any free software that was of muvh value. I finally wound up buying efofex which is excellent.
I participated intheir Beta testing and as a result, get updates for three years free. reccommend ypu try to find a similar deal.

For school geometry you could try wingeom (2D, 3D geometric construction workbench with example files ... free)

For somethnig rather more sophisticated you could look at Cmap. I have only looked at this page http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/cmap/
but it says if you join the yahoo group that you can download the software ... the graphics look pretty smart, worth taking a look.

Inkscape is the open source take on Illustrator/Freehand. I recently did a flowchart using Dia. There's also OpenOffice Draw, though I haven't used it.

The best way to do this for free would be making scissor motions with your hand to lure the cartoon out, then gluing the cutout to a white piece of paper.
