Unfortunately, everything is so expensive these days, people just want to feel they are getting a GREAT price instead of a fair deal for good work. Everything is disposable these days. People think like everything is that way...If I don't like the job, or get tired of it, I can get rid of it and it didn't cost much!?!?!?
It's a tough call, but I would try giving a price quote to a customer and tell them you'll reduce it by a % because economy/jobs are slow, time of year, whatever you think they want to hear. OR, try telling them you know they'll get other estimates and you encourage them to do so, once they have offer to compare quotes for them (for free) and tell them why yours was more(if so) i.e. notice what materials the competition is using and tell customer why your choice is best, etc. If you are quoting the same work and materials, offer to match their price and then beat it by % or offer to do the work quicker, etc. Does that help? Hope so! Good luck!

It all depends on what type of customers you were targeting! You might have started targeting people that are extremely price sensitive and look for cheapest alternatives. In order to survive/succeed you should target people that care about quality (thats if you are offering a value added service) only that way customers will be loyal to you!

I myself owning & operating a construction company for 35 years. Your answer is very simple- As the econmy changes, your focus on clientel should as well. Put your stratigy upon selling yourself, then the job. Relate more so to the customer who is borrowing the dollars to obtain their objective. They are price sensitive, but not critical if you sell yourself. Also, if you bid low to get the job. Then when you obtain it & preform it knowing the entire has to go smooth. Allways with a suspecion absorbing a loss. It is much better to sit at home doing nothing as opposed to work at it. Concentrate on selling yourself, when you have this accomplished. The bucks are no object.

Those people have yet to learn that sometmes you get what you pay for.
By using the cheapest guy all the time one time they will get burned and find out it is better to go with someone you have used before and trust than always the cheap guy.
