An anole is not a bad idea but they do appreciate more space than that. I once kept 12 in a tank that was 4' long by 2' deep by 4' high (converted from an old wall cabinet) and they used every inch of space in it.
I think the best recommendations so far are small amphibians - frogs, toads and salamanders all have species small enough for your tank. Be aware however that some amphibians are difficult to keep (and some start small and get big) so make sure you research the species before making a purchase.
Invertebrates are a good idea too - hermit crabs, rainbow crabs, scorpions, spiders, mantids, stick insects, cockroaches. Search the Web and you will find plenty of sites that will deliver invertebrates via mail.
If you have your heart set on a lizard you might want to consider something like a banded velvet gecko (Homopholis sp) but remember that small lizards tend to 1) like company, and 2) be very, very fast.
A nice idea would be a paradoxical frog tadpole - the tadpole is some 20cm long but changes into a frog just 5-6cm long. Unfortunately I have only seen paradoxical frog tadpoles for sale once, and that was about 15 years ago....

You might think about getting some fish. Fish are small and stay small. I know what you are thinking, "Oh, I don't want stupid goldfish". You can get exotic beautiful fish. If you are really looking for a land animal you could small snake. Like a corn snake. It is advised to give captive corn snakes a temperature from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (from a lamp or undertank heater), and a light cycle of eight to 12 hours of light per day. Those are some ideas for you, good luck.

i do no longer understand one turtle (land or water) that can stay in a 20 gallon for greater advantageous than 2 years. purple ear sliders and different aquatic turtles will often choose a minimum of a 55 gallon whilst they attain adulthood. 20 gallons is far too small for any turtle species to stay long term in.

most reptiles need more space then that, like a gecko or anole.
-but- some cool things that could are:
*hermit crab
*terantula
*fire belly toad, or a small tree frog
*maybe a small rodent, but 5 gallons might be too small.
also, you could set up something aquatic:
*fish
*aquatic frogs that live in water
*mostly aquatic frogs/newts with a land area for them to climb on
**along with frog idea** tadpoles
good luck finding a new pet!

There are not many lizards or snakes that can live in a five gallon tank there whole life, but you could look into one or two fire bellied toads, most frogs, and many different breeds of salamanders

no reptile can live in that size cage! Sorry about that, but its true. Are you interested in an insect? Maybe a small insect could survive.
