We are in the process of building a new house and just have had the plumbing done (water is not on yet). Our 3 year old son went up to the newly installed piping and turned on the valve and a blast of air went right into his face. I was wondering how high the PSI would be for something like this and if it could hurt his eyes.

the pressure is around 60 psi and should not hurt but the metallic particles and flux that hasnt been washed out yet is toxic, wash face and rinse eyes thouroughly,

The blast of air is a good thing. The plumbers pressure tested the lines to check for leaks. Make sure you tell the plumber that your son let the air out of the lines to save their sanity checking for leaks again. The air pressure should have been between 60-80 psi for leak detection. The air itself couldn't have hurt your sons eyes but any solder fragments or copper shavings in the lines from the installation could have been in there. If his eyes water or have greenish-blue residues at the corners, flush them out with clean water and take him to an optometrist.

Ive always run my pumps at 30lbs of pressure, but anytime you turn on a pipe with air pressure still in the lines, its not the air that could hurt your sons eyes, its what in the new lines that is being forced out that could get into his eyes and hurt him.
there's a little gadget that has a gage on the end of it and it can be purchased at any good hardware store. we use them for gas & water checks for the inspectors to gauge wheather or not the lines are leaking b4 use.
buy one that has the hose bib on the end and it'll screw right on your outside hose bibb and tell you immediately what the pressure is in your lines.
to much pressure is not good for the house and could blow or cause bypass of water at some appliances or weak joints in the lines. 15-30lbs is ok pressure. ask your contractor, he should know...he had to pass the test to get his license to pass the construction inpection with the local inspectors.
check it out!!!!!

Nice water pressure is around 60 pounds. You should just install a guage then you'd know what you have. I doubt that the air hurt his eyes, but if he hasn't learned his lesson, eventually it will.

the average water system is 60 psi. they "leak test" the plumbing at 100psi. the compressed air may do some damage. if he complains take him to doctor.
