(7 = 4 - 2y)

First I added 4 to both sides as I was under the impression that you're supposed to use the inverse of the operation being performed. According to this site though, the problem is solved by subtracting 4 from both sides. I thought you were always suppose to use the inverse operation. Can someone tell me what I'm missing here?

you were correct that you have to do the inverse on both sides but inverse means opposite. you have no sign in front of the 4 so that means it's positive (+). You now have to subtract (-) 4 on both sides. 4-4=0 and 7-4=3. you will then divide by a negative 2. -2y / -2 =y and 3 / -2 = -1.5
7 = 4 -2y
-4 -4
3 = -2y
/-2 /-2
-1.5 = y

Inverse means opposite. In this case the inverse of positive 4 is negative -4.
You subract 4 from both sides:
7 = 4 - 2y
-4 -4

7=4-2Y This is the technically correct verbiage; ADD A NEGATIVE 4 TO EACH SIDE. Just a matter of correct semantics, if you see this again and you will in higher math classes, because that is what the operation is called. So,

3=-2Y divide both sides by -2

-3/2= Y

Subtract 4 from both sides (You need to cancel out the 4 on the right side... it's a postive number so adding 4 will make it 8).

7 = 4 - 2y

Subtract 4:
7 - 4 = -2y

Simplify:
3 = -2y

Divide by -2 on both sides:
-1.5 = y

You need to isolate the variable (get the letter alone on one side of the problem). So do whatever it takes to do that as long as you do the same thing to both sides. Take 4 away from both sides 7=4-2y
-4 -4
3=-2y
divide both sides by -2
-1.5 =y

It is very easy what you are doing is correct, but that inverse operation or adding to both sides are the same.

here it goes

7 = 4-2y
7 - 4 = -2y
3 = - 2y
-2y = 3
2y = -3
y = -3/2

Thats it.
Just chage the signs if you go to the other side.
addition becomes subtraction, multiplication becomes division.

I usually read these alout to myself until they make sense:
seven equals four PLUS negaive 2y. So you would subtract 4 from each side leaving: 3 equals negative 2y, then you would divide both sides by negative 2.

1. Add 4 to both sides

2. divide the result by -2

3. By this pt. you have the y (the variable you are solving for) isolated on one side.

4. Punch 3 /-2 into the calculator and get the answer

4 is a positive number. Even though it is a subtraction equation, the number four is positive.
