Why or why not? Do you think they make good christmas presents to people?

Hermit crabs are great pets I think.. I used to go to the beach in the summer, I'd always come home with one.. and if cared for right they will last a LONG time. They don't require much care either.. I took mine out and held it, let it crawl on my hands etc.. I think that'd make a good pet.

I have 2 Betta boys of my own and love them to death.. They get so excited when I come to their tanks, I'm a Betta freak and am not sure if I could part with one I pick out to give as a gift, lol.. Glad to see a lot of people like Betta's, and thanks for your opinions =)

I think the males are beautiful, though I've never actually seen one that was active enough to be particularly fascinating in any way.
Giving them for presents is kind of ify. It doesn't require as much on the recipient's end as say a dog or a hamster even, but not everyone likes fish. Also, if the person you're thinking of has a tank that you think they could incorporate the Betta into, know that not all fish can co-op with a Betta. Tetras, for instance, will kill a Betta.

I adore bettas. They are the only type of fish I will own really. Right now I have three, a blue female, Aeris. A large red male, Vincent. And a multi colored male named Zell. All our in their little tanks swimming around having a fun time.
As far as Christmas gift, I actually think yes. Certaintly not to a child or an inresponsible teenager, but anyone else should enjoy these little fishes. I've gotten one for Christmas actually, two or three years ago.

I love bettas, I currently have 13; 5 males and 8 females.
they do not make good gifts because the common belief is that bettas can live in bowls or vases, but this is not true. they are tropical fish and need heaters. they also produce just as much waste as anyother fish and therefore need a filter. given as gift they are usually either given alone as just a fish or given with a vase and a care sheet saying to feed them sparingly or not at all to allow them to eat the roots. they are carnivorous and need betta food, roots of plants don't give them any of the right nutrients.
if a betta is given as a gift it should be given with the knowlegde that it is not just a deccoration and need just as much care as any other fish. the person receiving should either also receive the other things needed (such as a filter and heater and a 5 gallon tank) or know that they need to purchase these and be prepared to purchase these.
animals do not make good gits in general, because they are usually given without much thought as in how they are going to be cared for.

I love Betta's! I have one called Neptune in his own 30l tank and I love him to bits, he's a wonderful fish. All of the Betta's ive owned have had different personalities, and likes and dislikes - which makes them interesting. My current fish doesnt go mad for mirrors etc, loves cooked peas, and likes to sleep on top of his mini filter, whereas my last fish loved mirrors to flare at, wouldnt eat pea's, and slept in a plant. As for giving them as presents however, I think the maxim 'a pet is for life, not just for xmas' is appropriate.
Firstly, the only time I would ever buy one for someone else is when im really buying it for myself - i.e - I bought it for my other half but its staying in my house, simply because I feel that pet purchases of any kind should be done by the person who wants them, not to have it imposed on them. One of my freinds gets freaked out by fish for some reason and for me to give her a betta would probably result in tears and her screaming 'do you even know who I am????'
I also wouldnt give one to someone unless they had enough knowledge and the right equiptment to give him a good home, which means a tank for himself of a decent size, a water heater, and proper food as a bare minimum. Ideally, a person recieving the fish should already know that they breath air from the air like we do, know common ailments betta's can suffer from and how to treat them, know that strong filters can exhaust him, know what temperature is ideal, and that they MUST be kept alone. A Betta in a vase is a particularly good example of what is NOT good enough to take care of one!
Secondly, if someone I knew wanted a fish then I would take them to the store to pick one as there are so many different colours and I wouldnt want to impose my judgment on someone else, as well as to purchase the things they didnt have that they will need to keep Betta's to an acceptable standard.
Finally - I would find it difficult to buy one and then hand it over to someone else becuase id want to keep it myself, and I wouldnt want to buy it in advance ready to hand over on xmas day because keeping them in the plastic bags and transporting is quite stressful and should be kept to a minimum anyway.
HTH!

I had one once, and it never ate anything. Shrimp died a few days later. It was beautiful, but would you rather have a beatiful, shiny fish for 3 days or an average-looking fish that lived for 50 years?
Hint:The one that lived for 50 years would be the famous one that would live longer.
I supposed you cannot judge all bettas by one, but...

they are so cute, also they respond to me much better than any other fish. they make great presents if given to people who already have an aquarium and have some experience with fishes.
