How do you protect yourself from someone who wants to return item for refund because of any possible reason, given the fact software can be copied, pirated, etc...?

How do you determine if the buyer is trying to screw you over, or if the software really is defective, not working, etc...?

Either:

1) Post a no-returns policy. Sell as is. The downside of this is that fewer people will bid, because they will think you are trying to rip them off or at least avoid making good if things are bad, and also you will get bad feedback if someone does have a defective piece of software and you don't take it back.

or 2) Accept some returns, but make it clear that you will only accept returns if they are very clear on what the problem is, and you can duplicate the problem yourself when the product is returned. The downside of this is that its more work for you, and you'll also end up in some arguments, but the upside is that you trreat each case on thier own.

My bet is that you won't actually have all that many return products that are perfectly good if they've pirated them. It isn;t too hard to get pirated programs without going through the trouble of winning a bid on ebay, and even if someone does, it is just as easy to copy and resell as it is to bicker with you for a refund. You'll be ripped off some, but maybe not as much as you think, and all retailers have to build some theft into the cost of doing business.

Why do you have to offer returns on open software? Just do what Microsoft dose. Once you open it, you can no longer return it. You can also withheld the number and email it after they receive it.

sell your software "as is", with no returns allowed. if the software really is defective, they can return it to the manufacturer for a replacement.
