I have a Pentium III (Compaq, 128Mb RAM, 40 Gb hard drive) that came with preinstalled Windows ME. Since I'm thinking to get a fresh start (formatting the hard drive and install the OS), I'm wondering if it is a good idea to reinstall the WinME system (I have the CD from Compaq), or install Win2000 or WinXP (I have both). I heard that XP is relative small, but is my system good enough for it? What about Win2000?
I reinstalled WinME once before and I'm sure it'll work fine. But nowadays some third party programs don't run on ME any more. I checked compaq website and did not find much helpful tips.
Thank you very much for your help.

Because of the RAM amount, I say install Windows 2000. It is still a great OS.

After installing go straight to the Windows Update site and get all the updates. Also download Spybot Search and Destroy, as well as SpywareBlaster. Microsoft Defender is also available for Win2000, I believe.

You could also try using an alternative browser as there will be no IE7 for Win2000. I recommend Opera over Firefox.

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT re-install WinME.

You will need a lot more Ram for WIN XP. Windows Me on the other hand was the biggest junk. Microsoft ever released. Your Hard Drive is also kind of small. If you must stick to this machine, try to get at least another 128 RAM and install WIN 2000. It is a very stable OS, not as slick as XP but great. It will work relatively well on P3 machine and you will be able to format your drive using NTSF partition. This will make your machine safer and your system will probably never lock again.
Good luck!

Windows 2000 will probably work best on your system unless you want to buy a little more ram and install it, then xp will work too. I have A pII machine with 224 mb ram and win xp runs great on there. I have a machine running ME too and I haven't found it to be too troublesome even though I have heard many bad things about ME. If you like ME stick with it.

utilising the comparable OS disc two times does no longer be a sturdy theory, incredibly on the comparable community. ME is genuinely able to engaged on the comparable community as you presently have. All you % is an ethernet card to flow interior the gadget with ME. it is going to likely be plenty extra low-fee than finding out to purchase XP returned.
