Like they are trying to scare you or something. Up North in Mass where I'm from guys don't do that and when I visit my Mother in NY other guys don't do that, its got to be a regional trait.

its called "insecurity" and is probably caused by in-breeding and the bleak existence of the trailer park. you see, stereotypes are a reality, and not just an ignorant label.
the other idea, is that the stares are a compliment with lower socio-economic areas. the lower the earning potential, the more angst they harbor and the lower the IQ, the more they suffer paranoia of the elite.

I am from the south and i am not sure what you are talking about. Maybe they are just looking at you and want to say hi. They do a lot of nodding to say hello. I would like to call it southern hospitality if it is in nice way. I am sure you are used to people just not looking at you to not make eye contact. To argue with the other answers, just because you are from the south does not mean it is a lower socioeconomic thing. I take huge offense to that because we are not all backwoods rednecks in the south!!! Everyone looks at everyone here, it is polite to acknowledge that you see another person and you take it as glaring being from the north and all. I could be wrong and the guys you are talking about are just psychos plotting to kill you in their barn and feed you to the goats.

They're not trying to scare you, they just can tell you are from somewhere else. Not all guys in the South do that like if I were to go to NY I would probably get some of those glances too.

I can not understand why no one, except the Southern girl, know what is going on here. This is supposed to be the sociological section. There is a slight regional variance, but it has to do with the Southern " culture of honor " and not any of the stupid reasons given above. They probable made you as the Yankee you are. Get over it.

Ah, it's not just in the south. It's anywhere that's less urban. The more urbanized an area is, the more "proper manners" are expected.
