I think you were wise not to buy insurance. Most electronic retailers try this scam. Most of the profit electronics retailers actually make comes from soft-selling insurance policies which practically never need to be paid.

Congratulations, you bought a great product and it is high quality. Also, there are tons of great service options available if and when you need it after the warranty expires. There is a huge market for iPod accessorization, battery replacement and so on - and many seem to be very reasonably priced and can easily be searched for on the web.

If you are concerned about avoiding similar scams, and there are many of them... you might try a visit to the source below.

YES! On my old bro's b-day we got him a black nano ipod. My mom said he shouldn't take it to school because it had no insurance on it and something might happen. Of course, he took it to show his best friend. On a rainy day, we had to walk down to the bus stop. So, my bro listens to it the whole way down and then slips it in his front pocket of his b-pack. We had to wait about 20 minutes for the bus.

When we got home after school, he opened to find it soaking wet! After telling my mom, she was furious.

In the end, he never got enough money to pay off the insurance ( my mom wouldn't because he was told not to take it to school).

You made the right decision--the insurance is a ripoff. Insurance is only for things that would be catastrophic to lose, like your house. If you're talking about the extended warranty, that's a ripoff too.

You should have got a warranty just in case your iPod stops working cause most iPods start doing that..Paying 18 extra dollars is better than buying a whole new Ipod..

Well, if you have insurance, if it ever gets stolen or it stops working they'll replace it.
But if that happens you can buy a new one, so it isn't such a bid deal, let's hope it doesn't break.
